my commute to work is something like 40 minutes. i take the subway for half an hour then walk another 10 minutes. this is a great time for reading. typically i read the bible on the way out and something else on the way home. this last week i finished a book of short stories by flannery o'connor called everything that rises must converge. she has a way of nailing me in every story. there seems to always be at least one "ignorant" person playing to an "enightened" protagonist who the whole narrative looks down his nose at a backwards mother, or morally lost son, or naive friend. i think im usually in the "enlightened" group because i think i can get it together "and if i can do it, well you should too!". o'connor takes this mentality to its ultimate conlusions, showing how twisted it all is. great. i need to read more of her.
right now im reading lost in the cosmos; the last self-help book, as recommended by jason jung. its by walker percy, another southern catholic. right now i am loving it, but i'll let you know how it is.
